Martin Luther King

by thoughtfulconservative

I don’t often agree with Stuart Carlson’s political cartoons for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. But the one in Sunday’s paper with a quote from Martin Luther King was good.

Here is the quote,

There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular; one must take it because it is right.

In this time of shifting positions, holding a finger to see which way the wind is blowing, or checking to see what the latest poll says, may more of our political leaders heed Rev. King’s exhortation.

  1. A good thought, but they surely won’t. The way it’s worked since the 76 Supreme Court decision equating funding political campaigns with the right to “free speech” is that ever since, money does indeed talk. Our leaders get elected thanks to large corporations and wealthy individuals – and that’s who they work for once in office.

Meanwhile, on the campaign trail, they’ll say pretty much anything to get elected, and that goes across the liberal-conservative spectrum. Thus the fingers in the wind.

Wish this were youthful cynicism, but regretably, it’s realism about the political situation in the US. I’m fifty one and the game’s getting old.

  2. Well, I didn’t expect they would do it. And I don’t think it would make any difference if campaigns were publicly financed. They would still campaign the same way, we just wouldn’t see them as much because they wouldn’t be able to afford to do as much.
