Waukesha Carnival – Inauguration Edition

by thoughtfulconservative

Welcome to this weeks edition of the carnival. Yes, I’m late. Apologies. It’s tax time and unlike Tim Geithner, I know what I need to do, so the process has started. Oh, and I think there was an inauguration or something today.

Let’s start off with national politics. Huckleberry Dumbell at his post at the Spring City Chronicle shares his thoughts on Global Warming Climate Change.

Dad29 notes a Russ Feingold question of Hillary Clinton. What did that have to do with foreign affairs?

Tim at The Other Side of My Mouth notes some Bush bloopers. I love the dude but he could mess up the English language.

At Practically Speaking, Kyle Prast  wondered how Dixon Elementary was saving so much on natural gas usage. Kyle blogs plenty about Elmbrook School District stuff, if you live in the area.

Cindy Kilkenny published Elmbrook Schools’ superindendent Matt Gibson’s email on school consolidation at Fairly Conservative.

A little further west, James Wigderson says its time to end the Pabst Farms fantasy in a post at Wigderson Library & Pub. If liberals and conservatives agree, can it last very long?

In general stuff, Tom Gehl at Brookfield Basics gives us a tribute to retired Indianapolis Colts coach, Tony Dungy. He is an example to us all.

Dan Diebert is a 24 junkie also. He discusses the season thus far (before last Monday’s episode) and Jack’s kill count thus far at The D Spot.

MommaBlogger at Homemaker’s Guide to the Galaxy shares her experience at Iron Cupcake Milwaukee. Oh, and a nice little recipe for Apple Pancake Cupcakes.

Scott Feldstein had a post on morality and how those who don’t believe in God look at it. Some great comments. I disagree with Scott, but not on the fact that morality is a common problem, even if we don’t come to the same conclusion.

Blogs on the move. Bryon Houlgrave has moved his blog to WordPress. He posts some fine pictures.

Brian Fraley announced at Daily Takes that he was going on hiatus. We found out why.

Finally, Curt Otto has a question for us at Maple & Main. Well, an answer first, Two Thousand Five Hundred Forty Six. Here’s the story:

But last week, a student came to me and shared the most remarkable fact ever. And what made it even more spectacular was that she figured it out on her own.

It was an answer to an age old question- a question that has been asked for as long as I have been alive.

That’s it for this edition. If you have a post you liked, put it in the comments. Do the same for a post you’d like to submit for next week’s carnival. Or use this handy form. Past posts are archived here.

Waukesha Carnival, the 24 season premier edition

by thoughtfulconservative

Welcome to the January 11, 2009 edition, the forty-eighth. This is where I survey the Waukesha corner of the Cheddarsphere and bring what are, in my opinion, the best posts of the last week. Feel free to add yours in the comments.

Let’s get started.

Taking a look at some local items, over at Fairly Conservative, Cindy Kilkenny looks at the Elmbrook school slates. Be sure to check out the comments.

Alexander wonders at A little off Main if he’s in Madison and Vrakas is a RINO. I don’t go much for the RINO tag, but the post is worth a read.

Has Jeff made his last post at Five Points? If so, be sure to catch his update on downtown Waukesha.

Huckleberry Dumbell has some “lay observations” about the Waukesha housing market in this post at Spring City Chronicle.

You can read James Wigderson’s post about bias is all in the eye of Ricky on State at Wigderson Library & Pub.

Tom Gehl discusses The Denigration of Race in Milwaukee at Brookfield Basics.

In local sports, Tim Rock takes a look at the Trevor Hoffman deal with the Brewers at The Other Side of My Mouth.

Bryon Houlgrave is shooting Northstars. Wrestling pictures. You can find more of Bryon’s sports photos at SportsShooter.com.

Looking about posts dealing with more general issues, Kyle Prast has a post at Practically Speaking showing us that not only is the Homeschooling movement is growing, but so is “unschooling”.

Linda Richter has a post decrying guilt by association by both sides at Inside New Berlin.

Chris from Racine, blogging at silent E speaks has a couple of posts on a recent experience with customer service.

Then concerning taxes and spending, Sen. Mary Lazich (chief aide Kevin Fischer?) makes a correlation at Conservatively Speaking between the fastest-growing states and those with the lowest tax rates.

The Asian Badger thinks Obama may have a one good idea with nominating a “Chief Performance Officer” to monitor spending.

Dad29 has a couple of charts illustrating that our infrastructure spending is already huge.

That concludes this edition. You can submit posts you liked in the comments. If you read something in the coming week, you can either put them in the comments, e-mail them to me or use this handy form. Archives can be found here.

See you next week.

A Waukesha Carnival 06/08/08

by thoughtfulconservative

Well, it’s been a couple of weeks and there may be a couple of more before I do another one, but let’s go ahead and pop a carnival in here.

An Inexact Science is back and calling all readers.

Nationally, The Asian Badger discusses Russia offering to help us build a gas pipeline.

Josh at Blog Waukesha goes political and expresses many of the conservative hesitations about McCain.

Dad29 educates us on the preamble to World War II and a prime topic the last couple of weeks — appeasement.

If you have the stomach to get through them Kyle Prast has posted the letters she received from Wisconsin’s Senators at Brookfield7 concerning the cap and trade bill.

silent e goes on a fine rant on gas.

Locally, Bryon Houlgrave posts some pics of Milwaukee.

Most folks who read this will know that David at Carrick Bend Thoughts tipped Mark Belling about Wiggy’s post on the local Dems misadventures, but what got me thinking this week was his post on politically correct language.

Dean Culver, on the other hand, finds it hard to listen to conservative talk radio anymore, because there’re trashing [my word, not his] John McCain.

The Daily Scoff notes how a UW Madison study promotes drinking and what might be a future finding, if we can dream of such.

Tom Gehl at Brookfield Basics brings one of the good guys into the spotlight.

Spring City Chronicle takes us on a photographic tour of the proposed ball park in Waukesha. More thoughts can be found here.

James Wigderson posts on the new superintendent of the Waukesha School District and the meeting to appoint him.

Cindy Kilkenny notes a problem with the Brookfield East plans.

As usual, if you have a favorite you can link in the comments or send the link to me at thoughtfulconservative [at] yahoo [dot] com. If you have one for next week, you can submit using this submission form. Past posts can be found on here. I don’t know right now when the next edition will be.

Waukesha Carnival – Better late than never edition?

by thoughtfulconservative

Yeah, it was quite a weekend. I lost my internet on Sunday so couldn’t post, or even write it until tonight. I’ve got a busy weekend coming up so next week’s may be late also.

As usual, you can submit a post of your own to the next edition using our this hand submission form. Past posts and future editions can be found on the blog carnival index page.

We’ve got another lengthy one so let’s get started.

On the national front, Shawn Matson has another look at Obama’s potential VPs at The Case for Milwaukee, while silent e gives us two bumper stickers for our amusement. Sancho still believes it’s Obama’s race to lose and tells us why he thinks that at La Raza de Waukesha.

Other postings of national interest find Dad29 notes a possible correlation between the rise in gasoline prices and Alan Greenspan’s money policy. Posting at Rendezvous With Destiny, Troy Fullerton asks Why Are Democrats Doing the Bidding of Hugo Chavez?

Ready for a break? Bryon Houlgrave has some shots that prove spring really is coming.

Next comes state affairs. The Asian Badger dissects strategies of the Center on Wisconsin Strategy and the Wisconsin Council on Children & Families. James Wigderson treats us with the latest installment of his Idiot Politician of the Week. Cindy Kilkenny investigates Kevin Fischer’s vacations at Fairly Conservative.

Taxes done? Feeling pain? David B. Bohl gives us another helpful post with his 5 Ways to Reduce Tax Stress Next Year.

Local news finds the New Berlin bloggers hot and heavy into controversy. Read Matt Thomas, Linda Richter, J. Gravelle (whose two blogs have been added to the blog roll and will no doubt appearing further in this carnival. His April 1 post last year is too funny as is most of his posts), and New Berlin Citizens for Responsible Government may have something too.

Kyle Prast at her BrookfieldNOW blog Practically Speaking has notes on the Elmbrook school board meeting on the human growth and development curriculum.

Lisa has reviews the latest comic books at her blog, Sequentially Speaking.

Finally in Waukesha city, Curt Otto, who lives in downtown Waukesha, shares his thoughts on the Harley event. Jeff at Five Points blog defends the city administrator and mayor nelson from what he considers unfair criticisms. Fox Head gives his first thoughts about the potential Waukesha School District referendum.

Spring City Chronicle reflects briefly on floods.

I was going to feature a post on media election spin by Jessica McBride, but I can’t link to the post without permission and probably not too many others could either, so I’ll link to her excellent column in the Waukesha Freeman on Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Dave Umhoefer, whose article, by the way, you can read here.

Wow, that does it for this week. Hopefully, I’ll post the next edition of the carnival on Sunday this week, or, at least, Monday.

Waukesha Carnival time!

by thoughtfulconservative

After missing last week due to another trek to north central Ohio (where we got but a dusting from the storm that left 10+” here), we have another rather large edition of the carnival. We better jump right into it.

David B. Bohl starts us off with How to Maintain Professional Boundaries posted at Slow Down Fast Today!

Kyle Prast from Practically Speaking posts some statistics crimes at the Brookfield High Schools.

Dad29, who is in favor of the Elmbrook referendum, wonders if the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board will be speech cops.

Cindy Kilkenny is against the Elmbrook school district referendum.

Linda Richter wants us to hold Alderman Ken Harenda accountable.

The New Berlin Citizens for Responsible Government shares their April 1 Ballot recommendations.

Curt Otto has some pictures of Harley Fest.

Spring City Chronicle recommends Christopher Hernandez For Alderman in Waukesha District 3.

James Wigderson clarifies things in Which candidate is he [not James but Charles Betker] not endorsing?

I included this post from Jeff entitled Sweeping The Streets: March 27, 2008 because he touched on Mayor Nelson being unfairly blamed for downtown vacancies and because once again we are shown how much the public doesn’t understand TIFs.

Bryon Houlgrave posted a funny picture. While this shot is humorous, this post tells some of the trials of trying to get those pictures.

Josh presents some good thoughts on sex offenders posted at Blog Waukesha.

Pete Fanning gives us a truly disturbing political video.

Wisconsin State Senator Mary Lazich (aide Kevin Fischer?)informs us about taxes in her post, Tax Freedom Day in Wisconsin is April 24 posted at Conservatively Speaking.

Shawn Matson has made some adjustments to his blog now entitled The Case for Milwaukee to his blog. You can now also get to it via this link.

The Asian Badger has a post showing us that not all liberals are completely brain dead.

That concludes this edition, but by no means exhausted all the fine posts this time. It is election time, after all.

Submit your blog article to the next edition of the carnival using the convenient carnival submission form. Past posts and future editions can be found on the blog carnival index page.

Around the newspapers

by thoughtfulconservative

A couple of quick shots.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel NewsWatch,

[ Elmbrook School District Superintendent] Gibson said there was erroneous information in the ad. He said less than $14 million of the total $62.2 million referendum would be spent on new construction for gym space. The ad said $21 million would be spent.

“The information isn’t accurate,” Gibson said.

A political ad with inaccurate information? I’m shocked.

Town of Waukesha wants to protect wells.

Town officials have expressed concern that if the city [of Waukesha] opens a 3 million-gallon-a-day well field adjacent to the Vernon Marsh, the productivity of nearby residential wells and the viability of the marsh will be harmed.Tallinger said Waukesha Mayor Larry Nelson has indicated that the city would fix wells that are harmed by the city’s tapping into the shallow aquifer.

“He hasn’t given us a damn thing here to verify that,” Tallinger said.

Is Mayor Nelson promising something he can’t deliver? How much are we looking at?
