Ah, those crazy politicians,

by thoughtfulconservative

bloggers and news outlets.

President Obama has made some recess appointments and to read and listen to the buzz, you’d think no one has ever done this before.

Ah, yes, the old game of political hypocrisy is in full swing. Democrats who criticized Bush when he made recess appointments now say President Obama is justified in making his. And Republicans criticize Obama while forgetting all the ones Bush made.

Actually recess appointments have been used by presidents since the founding of the republic. And it’s completely legal!

But to listen to the cries of outrage from both sides you’d think that Presidents Obama or Bush (depending on your political leaning and time frame) invented it and is using it for dastardly purposes.

Pshaw!

You’d never guess by what is being said/written that all these folks held opposite opinions a couple of years earlier.

Newsmax labeled the move “Sneaky.” I’m fairly certain they never used that label with Bush’s appointments.

Likewise the New York Times.

Righty blogs are outraged now, but not so much back then.

Lefty blogs? Just the reverse. (I’ll let you find them; I’m too tired.)

Politicians? Likewise. Note this about John McCain.

And, of course, the president, who, as the ultimate politician tries to have it every which way he can, opposing the filibuster while voting for it.

Let’s get to something important, people.

The Dead Sea Scrolls

by thoughtfulconservative

Recently, I took the tour of The Dead Sea Scrolls at the Milwaukee Public Museum.

Being a Bible geek, I found it utterly fascinating. That ancient writings could survive so long is amazing.

That they would agree so much with manuscripts that date from much later is miraculous.

It’s a tad pricey at $26, but you do get a museum admission also. If you’re a member it’s much cheaper.

Over-taxed? Or not?

by thoughtfulconservative

You’ve no doubt seen this story:

47% of households owe no tax – and their ranks are growing

Most people think they pay too much to Uncle Sam, but for some people it simply is not true.

I guess it speaks to this headline, then:

Bad News For Dems– 66% Say America Is Overtaxed.

Since I withheld more than I wound up owing, I still paid taxes, right?

I mean, I don’t want to be unpatriotic or unChristian….

From the “What was he thinking?” files

by thoughtfulconservative

Gov. Robert F. McDonnell, reviving a controversy that had been dormant for eight years, has declared that April will be Confederate History Month in Virginia, a move that angered civil rights leaders Tuesday but that political observers said would strengthen his position with his conservative base.

via McDonnell’s Confederate History Month proclamation irks civil rights leaders.

Who in the world thought this was a good idea?

If you want to declare something, how about “Civil War History Month?”

So much for an up and coming Republican.

How many times can they shoot themselves in the foot?

If you see one movie this year…

by thoughtfulconservative

Ever hear of Briargate Christian School? No? Well, it was called Wingate Christian School in the movie. How about Michael Oher? Ah, getting closer.

Yes, I’m talking about “The Blind Side” the movie that received a nomination for Best Movie and won Sandra Bullock an Academy award for Best Actress.

It’s a movie that connects emotionally. A poor black homeless kid gets taken in by a well-to-do white family. Southern family.

Kinda breaks all the stereotypes Hollywood tries to set up.

But the story is too compelling to ignore.

I get so wrapped up in the story….

Jae Head as Sean, Jr., captured the crowd.

There are few surprises; you could probably surmise the story line without even seeing the movie.

But if you want to feel good for a change and go see a movie where you don’t have to worry about what’s going to come out of an actor’s mouth or how much of their body you’re going to see, this movie’s for you.

And besides, it’s at the Silver Budget Theater–can’t beat the price.
