Iraq works to reverse doctor brain drain

I believe in all the second amendment rights and, of course, Iraq is not the US, but this just seems wrong.

Iraq announced Monday it will let doctors carry firearms, one of several measures aimed at trying to keep medical workers from leaving the war-torn country.

Desperate times sometimes call for desperate measures.

John McCain on “Fox and Friends”

This morning:

“I also strongly recommended that we use the exchange stability fund that the Treasury has available – $250 billion – to shore up these institutions. Also, the Treasury has at its disposal about $1 trillion that they could begin without Congressional authority buying up some of these terrible mortgages and help stabilize the situation.” [Emphasis mine]

Great. So now we don’t need Congress?

Confused?

If Ralph Nader agrees with Jim Sensenbrenner, things must be confused.

One thing troubles me though,

Today, the American people rose up and slapped down the two Wall Street controlled political parties.

If Wall Street controls both parties, why was it voted down?

Tropicana Field catwalks

For those who have never been there, I give you this ESPN video about Jim Cagle walking the catwalks at Tropicana Field. After all, who knows how much longer it will be standing?

Baseball Playoffs

The Rays still don’t know who they’re playing. Since Chicago beat Detroit today, Minnesota and Chicago meet tomorrow in Chicago to determine who goes home and who goes on. John Danks will go for the White Sox while Nick Blackburn goes for the Twins. James Shields will be starting on Thursday afternoon in St. Petersburg no matter who they play. They will also play Friday and Sunday with other games scheduled for Monday and Wednesday, if required.

John Lackey of the Los Angeles Angels will face Jon Lester of the Red Sox Wednesday evening in Los Angeles. Games will follow on Friday and Sunday with if necessary games on Monday and Wednesday of next week. The Red Sox may be hampered if Josh Beckett can’t come back from his injury by his expected start date of Sunday.

In the National League, Milwaukee goes to Philadelphia to start the playoffs. The Phillies will start Cole Hamels while the Brewers send Yovani Gallaro. Game 2 will be on Thursday and Game 3 Saturday. If necessary, Games 4 and 5 will follow on Sunday and Tuesday.

The Los Angeles Dodgers-Chicago Cubs series starts Wednesday as well. The Cubs will send Ryan Dempster against the Dodgers’ Derek Lowe. Game 2 will also be in Chicago on Thursday before moving to LA on Saturday for game 3. If necessary, game 4 will be in LA on Sunday and game 5 on Tuesday in Chicago.

To update my beginning of the year predictions, I got the Angels and Red Sox in the playoffs along with the Cubs and Phillies in the NL. But Cleveland is not going to win the World Series.

House Rejects Bailout Package, Stocks Plunge

Via the NYTimes.com

The vote against the measure was 228 to 205, with 133 Republicans joining 95 Democrats in opposition. The bill was backed by 140 Democrats and 65 Republicans.

Wisconsin’s delegation voted as follows:

Democrats 4-1 in favor (Baldwin, Kind, Moore and Obey for; Kagen against).

Republicans 2-1 against (Sensenbrenner and Petri against; Ryan for).

Each side blames the other for the failure. Republicans fault Nancy Pelosi’s speech before the vote. Democrats say the Republicans are putting partisanship before the country.

Stocks have tumbled. Shortly before the closing bell, the Dow was down 777 points, NASDAQ was down almost 200 points and the S&P 500 was down 106 points. A sea of red is scrolling across the bottom of CNBC’s screen. This is the largest drop in 10 years.

Republicans leadership is said to be working hard to get the thirteen votes they need to pass the bill.

Oh and another byproduct of this is that Citicorp is buying Wachovia.

The Asian Badger read the bail out bill and gives his thoughts.
