Musings of a Thoughtful Conservative

John McCain’s new improved website

Got the info via e-mail so I went over and checked it out. You can now choose whether you’re a Supporter,  , or Unregistered voter with the website delivered according to what is checked.

They want to know how folks like it with a survey.

My McCain Space is still not working so that will be on my survey.

Perhaps we need a Blackberry control law

Are members [of Congress] BlackBerry addicts?

We have to do something. There’s just too much influence on Congress from these things.

We could limit usage of the devices. It would require registration, no doubt.

And then we could have each caller register as a lobbyist before the representative or senator takes their call.

I’m sure you have other ideas.

Happy Birthday, Les Paul

Well a belated one.

With all the weather in Waukesha, one can understand.

Happy Birthday, Les Paul.

A tip of the conservative ball cap to soul to soul.

McCain’s Evangelical Problem?

The Week had a compendium of op/ed pieces about John McCain’s potential (?) problems with conservative evangelicals. Here are the pieces if you can’t access the link:

McCain Extends His Outreach, but Evangelicals Are Still Wary

Lori Viars, an evangelical activist in Ohio, said she is waiting to see whether McCain uses his choice of a running mate to ease concerns among social conservatives about his views on abortion and other social issues. “A lot of us are in a holding pattern.”

Evangelicals not McCain’s only problem

McCain needs to drum up more enthusiasm from many parts of the Republican coalition, but his “need for the evangelicals is most crucial.”

Religious Right feeling rejected by McCain

“the fact is, McCain’s moderates can’t beat Obama’s adoring groupies.” Moderates aren’t the voters who “raise money, register voters, print and pass out voter guides, recruit their neighbors, and drive people to the polls.”

A Campaign We Can Believe In?

There are plenty of reasons for Republicans to be “alarmed that the McCain campaign doesn’t seem up to the task of electing John McCain.”

There was also one in the Tennessean over the weekend.

D. Michael Lindsay, assistant director of the Center on Race, Religion and Urban Life at Rice University, said white evangelicals, which make up a quarter to a third of the vote in most elections, have been the largest and most loyal bloc of votes for the Republicans.

But in high-turnout Democratic primaries, there were signs of slippage for the GOP. Exit polls showed that in Virginia and Georgia primaries, both won by Obama, the Illinois senator won overwhelmingly among those who go to church at least weekly. Those voters were 44 percent of the Democratic primary electorate in Georgia, 38 percent in Virginia.

So they make it sound like McCain only has trouble with evangelical or social conservatives. My observations are that he has trouble with conservatives of all stripes, not just religious ones.

McCain’s just got problems and i don’t think they’re getting better yet. That may change.

I sure hope so.

Republican Dream Ticket?

I don’t think it would be as dreamy as Mr. Lowe thinks.

But it is funny, in a Republican sort of way.

Too sad

James and Doreen will be putting their kids in private school next year and he tells us why.

Sad because I realize this may even be isolated, but it only takes one or two to muck things up.

Quote of the Day 06/09/08

Curt Otto on the flooding in downtown Waukesha,

As a matter of fact, it has been so busy here that many of the store owners downtown are considering flooding the river at least once a month to help stimulate sales.

Door number 1? Or door number 2?

Most every one has heard of Let’s Make a Deal. Perhaps not as many people have heard of Marilyn vos Savant, but she writes a column in Parade magazine that comes as an insert in many Sunday newspapers, called Ask Marilyn. She is famous for having been listed in Guinness World Records Hall of Fame for having the highest IQ.

OK, back in September 1990, there appeared this question,

“Suppose the contestants on a game show are given the choice of three doors: Behind one door is a car; behind the others, goats. After a contestant picks a door, the host, who knows what’s behind all the doors, opens one of the unchosen doors, which reveals a goat. He then says to the contestant, ‘Do you want to switch to the other unopened door?’ Is it to the contestant’s advantage to make the switch?”

What’s the answer?

Be careful, tons of people, including many math Ph.D. holders got this wrong.

The problem is now referred to as the Monty Hall problem. And is given a prominent spot on her website.
